The challenge
Two sections of surfacing had failed on a two-lane road that carries traffic in both directions. The repair had to be made in one lane while vehicles kept moving in the other.
The approach
- 01Both failed sections were cut back to straight edges and the old material removed.
- 02The exposed base was cleaned and primed with tack coat.
- 03Asphalt was delivered by tipper and spread by hand to level.
- 04Each patch was compacted with a tandem roller and finished flush with the existing surface.
Site safety
As visible in the photographs:
- A warning triangle and a chevron board set out ahead of the work area.
- A flagman controlling traffic past the closed lane.
- Crew in high-visibility clothing throughout.

Step 01
Cut and prime
First patch cut to straight edges, cleaned and coated with tack coat.

Step 02
Second patch prepared
The second failed section prepared, with a warning triangle and chevron board set out beyond it.

Step 03
Traffic held
A flagman controls traffic past the work while the lane is closed.

Step 04
Asphalt in
Hot mix tipped into the first patch and spread to level by rake.

Step 05
Second patch filled
The tipper discharges straight into the second patch; the crew spreads by shovel.

Step 06

The first patch rolled and finished; the tandem roller moves on while traffic passes in the other lane.

Step 07
